Thank you for that. In every way a fascinating dialectic. And boy, are they tough on Grande. I think too many fail to accept how much her performative shallowness - I’m shorthanding here - serves as a yardstick for the soulful Erivo to soar, quite literally. Glinda is the societal and cultural archetype against which the Othered Elphaba stands our. Even her weight - much debated here - offers a sly commentary on the desexualizing downside of Mad Ave enabling body dysmorphia. Erivo is thus more womanly and body positive. And spoiler: we know which woman wins the coveted and heavily objectified dude. |
