at Paper Mill Playhouse in the 1990s. She was terrific, and still tapping wonderfully. That production apparently recreated the choreography, as well as many of the production elements of the 1971 Broadway production. Also memorable besides Ms. Gallagher were Eddie Bracken as Jimmy and Kay Ballard as Pauline. I remember reading about Ms. Gallagher in one of Lehman Engel’s books about musical theater where he talks about people’s different career trajectories before naming who they were. In Ms. Gallagher’s case, she was a Tony winner (for “Pal Joey” as Gladys Bumps), who then starred in the title role in a Broadway flop (“Hazel Flagg”) who steadfastly kept on doing the work in many productions, finally making a huge comeback to winning the Tony for Best Actress in “No, No, Nanette!”. He talked about her being easy to work with, diligent, hard-working and as a model of how to be as a performer. She also shared her knowledge for many years teaching at HB Studio. To see her live performing live on stage was to believe it, and she really delivered! Rest in peace, Ms. Gallagher!
