Did that same doublefeature and was also dazzled by both. I concur with most of what has been said (I've seen a lot of Roses, including LuPone, with Peters the clearly favorite -- and I actually saw her in early in the run. She sounded great).
Two things I have not seen mentioned:
1. Although I know it was dinged, I thought the direction was innovative and thoughtful.
2. It wasn't part of Peters' performance but it was part of my perception of her work that she actually had been a child performer (in "Gypsy," to boot). For me, that informed so many of her choices and made them even more poignant.
