I saw her when I was a kid at the Winter Garden. She was incredible -- wonderful acting, and she was the first, and it was breathtaking, to continue her bowing as audience applause died down at the conclusion of "Rose's Turn" so that it seemed she was living her hallucination. She sang strongly throughout and added some high notes in head voice -- but only in "Together" as an answer/echo at times to Herbie and Louise, where Lansbury also kicked up her heels literally very high. The rest of the cast were very good as well, but she's probably the best I've seen in the role. Among other fine ones -- Dolores Gray (very strongly sung and persuasive acting, up in summer stock in Corning, NY), Tyne Daly (strong voice, though a little rough around the edges and some interesting, and effective acting choices - specifically, when she leaves at the end, she really didn't want to give up her dream, still felt she was gonna fight to stay in show biz somehow), Bernadette Peters (saw her into the run - in strong voice, well-acted, very sexy and perhaps the most lady-like and genteel when she wanted to turn on the charm), Patti LuPone (at Encores - very strong-voiced as expected, played up some of the humor, especially good chemistry with very fine Laura Benanti). I think still the Lansbury over all was probably the best (besides Merman on the OCR) and among best female musical performances I ever saw. | |
