I saw her fairly late in the run, apparently once she had settled into the role, and I thought she was awesome. I liked her better than Daly or LuPone. Her “Rose’s Turn” was intense; she was simultaneously powerful and vulnerable, and while her voice sounded a little raspy, it perfectly suited Rose’s desperation. I remember I was sitting way up in the Shubert balcony compliments of TKTS, but Peters was so warm and and her embrace of the audience was so encompassing, I forgot the distance between me and the stage within the first fifteen minutes of the show. I was hesitant about seeing it, since Peters had gotten some bad press during the run, but I was glad I did. As for the Tony that year, it should have been Peters’. Winokur was lovely and charming in Hairspray, and clearly very talented, but I thought Peters’ performance was deeply felt and brilliantly executed. One more thing: of the three actors I’ve seen as Rose on stage and the two I’ve seen on screen, Peters was the most credible to me as the mother of June; it seemed that the same performance DNA ran through them.
