Is Messner’s story stage worthy? Open question still. If so, wouldn’t it need a team of collaborators with the milieu and regional history in their life experiences? Someone like - examples only obviously - the late great Carol Hall and say Beth Henley? The show’s score feels showy but fundamentally borrowed, inauthentic, with appropriated cultural tropes beyond Elton John’s - and playwright James Graham’s - world. Two Brits. As a southerner by birth and upbringing, I find these attempted captures of the world i know arch, leaving the show miles behind out of the gate.
