Thanks so much, Amiens. I was able to read that interview last night. I would guess that's where Scott McIsaac got his info. Whether it's entirely accurate or not is something we may not be able to know. Anyway, I certainly don't know right now. What we can know is that Verdon had plenty to say in Can-Can, even if her dialogue was cut down during rehearsals or the tryout (or both). The script exists. Of course, she didn't really say that all she had to say was those two lines. But in the reviews, not only was her dancing hugely praised, she was also praised as a comic actress, so she clearly had quite enough to do in the scenes. When the show opened in Philly, it had a running time of three hours and 15 minutes. That was according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, while The Billboard (as it was still known, and with theatre a major part of what it covered still at that time), it was three hours and 20 minutes. Not much difference, but in any case, cutting was needed. And not only was Lilo taking precedence over her, so were Peter Cookson and perhaps especially Hans Conried and Erik Rhodes, with whom she did most of her scenes, and I imagine neither of them wanted this dancer stealing their big comic scenes. Not that they really had to worry. They got good reviews, their comedy being one of the things that the critics liked in a show that got somewhat mixed reviews. Again, much thanks for providing this source! |
