Yes, this is the first time CBS will not be broadcasting the parade, after doing it going back to at least the early 1970s. As someone noted on another board, CBS was never allowed to use the word "Macy's" on its broadcast because it wasn't the official broadcast partner. As a result, CBS wasn't getting the sponsorship money to allow them to spend big on their show. And they weren't getting the ratings, either - NBC's broadcast is always one of the top 100 highest rated shows of the year. (As is the National Dog Show that airs just afterwards.) It probably wasn't worthwhile for CBS to keep doing its cheap-looking broadcast, considering they likely weren't bringing in much money with it. During the seventies, IIRC, the CBS broadcast switched between parades in New York, Detroit, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Honolulu. Twenty or thirty minutes on each city before they bounced to the next. I seem to recall Valerie Bertinelli doing the play-by-play once on the Philly parade. This is similar to when CBS stopped doing their annual New Year's Eve show. After Guy Lombardo died, they continued doing a show for 10 or 20 years, but were getting outspent and out-rated by ABC and "Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve," to the point where they decided it wasn't worth the expense. So the show went away. And life went on. |
