I agree. While flawed, it's a lot more interesting than a lot of the soulless movie adaptation/jukebox drek that's typically on Broadway. They went for something different with Tammy Faye & while it doesn't always work, I think it still made for a very enjoyable & memorable theatrical experience. Plus the score is good! There are some real standout tunes (namely "Empty Hands" & "If You Came To See Me Cry").
Also, the show has a very positive message. I'm a gay man & I have a lot of LGBT friends who were turned off from the subject matter (clearly they're not familiar with the real Tammy Faye!). But the show has such a positive, pro-queer message. (Plus most of the creative team is queer!) It's very critical of the "fire & brimstone" Christians that judge others (which is why Jerry Falwell is basically the show's villain). It's frustrating that so many people are missing the point of the show. It has a lovely message, even if it's beating you over the head with it at times.
So glad I saw it. |
