Alongside everything else that's being said about the film adaptation, I just want to pause to point out that two Broadway veterans are giving wonderfully multi-layered performances in this film adaptation. They deserve shout outs.
WAITRESS's Keala Settle is playing Miss. Coddle, and SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS's Ethan Slater is playing Boq.
John M. Chu should be credited for drawing out superb performances from his whole cast, but I really loved the ways he lets these two talented actors shine. Acting on film is an entirely different skill than performing on a stage, and both of them find the tiniest details to round out their characters -- all captured beautifully in close-up angles.
Really looking forward to seeing more of Mr. Slater's performance in Part 2 next year.
