Ms. Osnes's voice on the Encores recording of PIPE DREAM recently hopped into my Spotify shuffle, and once again I was reminded of what a perfect interpreter of Rodgers & Hammerstein II she is. I saw her in SOUTH PACIFIC at LCT, and I almost couldn't believe just how good she was. In June of this year, Ms. Osnes did an interview with the faith-focused blog of conservative newspaper The Washington Times, -- linked below. As she discusses in the interview, Ms. Osnes identifies as a Bible-believing Christian and trusts that she was 'cancelled' to serve a higher purpose. It can be hard to be a conservative Christian on Broadway. (Which Nicole Scherzinger may be learning.) But there are more than you might know -- and even Bible studies & coffee clubs that cater to them (as I would know because I attended them -- before losing my own religion). Many are often smushed into ideological corners that can feel suffocating -- especially in terms of support for LGBTQ+ people and their rights. In the USA, many evangelical Christians doubted the science behind COVID-19 vaccination. Certainly, some of Broadway's believers find ways to let the seeming conflict and contradiction inspire a humble kind of artistic exploration -- see Michael McElroy's astonishing work with the Broadway Inspirational Voices -- or they write, speak, and sing about the overlap in challenging ways -- see Kristin Chenoweth and Billy Porter's entire careers. But for Ms. Osnes, I'm going to allow myself to read through the lines a bit and say that she sure seems like she didn't fit in -- socially -- within the Broadway community, and she's more comfortable where she is now. Sounds like she's got a great husband and a happy (if humble) career in faith-based projects. New York City isn't for everybody. - GMB |
