Chevalier's role was in the show. It was just expanded for the film. Originally played by C. K. Alexander, who was 10 years younger than Cookson but was a character actor and probably was playing an older character. At Encores! the role was played by Eli Wallach. David Brooks played the role in the 1981 revival.

I know of no evidence that Lilo had any of Verdon's songs cut. One duet for Verdon and Hans Conried, "Her Heart Was in Her Work," was cut either before rehearsals or during rehearsals. If Ben Bagley is to be trusted on this, it was cut because Conried found it too dirty. This is plausible as it's filled with sexual innuendo that's startling even today. Additional verses beyond what Bagley recorded are in The Complete Lyrics of Cole Porter. That book has another cut song, "I Do," that might have been for the same characters, but I'm guessing this one never made rehearsals.

Of the three out-of-town reviews I can find, two rave about Lilo and say nice things about Verdon. The third praises Lilo and raves about Verdon.

According to William McBrien's bio of Porter, which relies in part on highly questionable sources, Verdon thought part of the reason she made such a hit was the rarity of her appearances, and Verdon attributed that to Lilo's machinations or demands, but McBrien writes that the original book does not seem to have featured her much more.

Where did you read that Lilo insisted that Verdon be offstage at the ends of her dance numbers?
