| I imagine what sparked that was Butz's injury/illness early the run when Taye Diggs came in to cover the role for an extended period. Diggs was, at the time, married to Idina Menzel and my guess is that they reached out to him because he was there and available and not unqualified, even though he was quite a different type from Butz. He was even a bit of name, thanks to RENT, and had built in PR value, thanks to being married to one of the show's stars. But then, I imagine, the powers the be saw him in the role and liked what he did, maybe even more than what Butz had been doing. So when the time came to recast permanently, they continued to cast in the Diggs mold, rather than looking for someone to bring what Butz brought. Reminds me a bit of Cornelius and Irene in HELLO, DOLLY!, originated by character actors, now played by more conventional handsome/pretty leading man/lady types. |
