| I very much enjoy the splashy Gypsy overture but I mostly know it from the 2003 Bernadette Peter revival recording. I don't know who played the trumpet solo for that show, but after seeing this show last night with a less distinctive trumpet solo there, I was reminded what a thrilling performance it was. I listened to some other recordings today and only then realized that the bonkers trumpet solo up to I think a B-flat was an unusual feature in that 2003 revival! What a thrill. As for the rest of last night's performance, I imagine the character development and musical choices will sharpen throughout previews. I admit I was expecting a more "color conscious" interpretation of the show because of the casting, and what I saw last night felt instead like a traditional, glitzy production of a great, great musical starring actors of color for the first time on Broadway. |
