Yes, Audra is an extraordinarily gifted actor. I will see Gypsy in two weeks and report back, but I wanted to chime in with a memory. When I saw her as Bess, in The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess, I sat in the front row. As problematic as that production was - I thought Audra was breathtaking. And it wasn’t just her singing. It was her acting. To see her deep commitment to the character and the specific beats she played - up close - is something I will never forget. I don’t think another actor could have made me feel what I felt watching that production. Audra’s great gift is so much more than her glorious singing. I can’t wait to see her Rose. And I’ve seen a lot of them - on stage Daly, Lavin, Peters, LuPone, and on film Midler and Russell. I think McDonald will be superb, regardless of how the score sits in her voice. She is a phenomenon. |
