I concur. She was an absolute sensation last night. Her characterization is full, deep, and surprising. And she’s very funny (something I was a bit worried about).

I don’t know if any of us can truly assess how well her voice fits into the role. We’ve listened to Merman so many times, we’re used to a steamroller and a belter. Audra is working to make her voice fit better — and having great success. It gets better (or maybe we just get used to it?) throughout the evening. And by Rose’s Turn (which was spectacularly acted and sung) it doesn’t matter.

Joy Woods delivers. Her take on Louise’s growth and emergence is terrific. She’s a star. And matches Audra step for step.

But Audra is giving the best performance of her career. She doesn’t go insane at the end, mercifully, laughing maniacally. Instead, it’s believable, powerful, and genuine. You understand it. And her.

I’ve seen a lot of Roses? Daly, Lupone, and Peters (multiple times). I know the book so well. But last night, it all felt fresh and new. Audra pulled it off last night. All of it.

Special nod to Camille A. Brown who has boys leaping high, the ensemble effortlessly kicking, and has constructed an Eden that left me desperate to see more of her work — it’s something!
