We’re probably not meant to comment about this new movie version of the WICKED script, but I will say that seeing the film made me appreciate Mantello, the original director, especially the balances between comedy, high drama, passion, pace, commitment and the unrelenting movement from scene to scene to scene. Thrilling. And, of course, Menzel’s daring, Chenoweth’s bold choices, Carole Shelley’s Falstaffian variety, and those louche looks (and slacks) on Butz.
I saw the original cast by virtue of a lottery ticket so saw everybody from the second row. On the edge of my seat throughout. Menzel especially gripped ahold of Elphaba’s drive to be a contender and never let go. |
