| I've seen worse. A lot worse. Mostly, it was a nothingburger. Although memory dims a bit because at the time I didn't think it was worth spending too much effort to commit anything to memory (unlike watching the unfolding train wreck of Tammy Faye). It was done like a slapstick farce with a breakneck pace, with lots of slamming doors, mistaken identities, and, as I recall, masks that added to the confusion that I guess was meant to be funny. NOTHING was funny, despite a very hard-working cast. I saw it at what I guess was the last Wednesday matinee (via a free ticket). The audience sat in mostly stunned silence. The frantic pace was, I think, exhausting for the audience. You didn't have time to consider the issues being raised -- if there were any issues. Happily, those were the days before the obligatory standing ovation so the audience didn't have to pretend to have enjoyed it, like it did at such dogs as Honeymoon in Vegas. Instead, the audience was polite, but filed out in silence, speaking mostly about plans for dinner. I have a friend who had a friend in the cast (Jeff Weiss) who reported that in Boston it ran nearly three hours and by the time in got to NY it was about 90 minutes -- yet nothing was missed. I did see Yellow Face. I'm glad the playwright has been able to mine a past personal disaster and was able to get people to pay to consider his personal tortures. But I didn't really care, especially knowing how insignificant, from an audience point of view, the source of his torture had been. The Face Value failure was not unjustified and its failure had NOTHING to do with racial issues. |
