I saw the show for the first and only time (so far) that first year. Did not care for it. Thought the adaptation was terrible with the show taking only the title and some names from the novel. In fact, the show's conclusion (spoilers...I guess...) which has Elphaba faking her own death at the hands of Dorothy and going off to some Happily Ever After with Fiyero was specifically considered and rejected in the novel. The set made little sense at times and I remember hearing that the set was designed for an early version of the script and they were not able to do any serious redesign when material was cut and new material came in. Mantello's direction annoyed me, because there were times when set pieces were blocking the action of a scene from view (from my seat in the orchestra right) even though these set pieces were purely decorative and served no purpose in the scene. When I later saw the Roundabout ASSASSINS, I was struck by how much Mantello must have learned from directing WICKED, his first musical. It felt like most of Menzel's performance was screaming as loud as she could on pitch. The whole thing reminded me of a sequin...shiny and sparkly, but without much there.
