I saw Swept Away last night and was struck by the large all-male cast. We've seen a few musicals in recent years with no men (Suffs, the recent 1776 revival), and there have certainly been plays (Take Me Out, That Championship Season - I guess it's a sports thing?) with larger all-male casts (not to mention the many more plays with just 2-3 male characters). But I'm having trouble coming up with a musical - especially one with a chorus (as opposed to a smaller musical like Three Guys Naked from the Waist Down, which I would love to see revived) - where there are no women on stage (and no female characters, to boot). Even something like The Scottsboro Boys is almost all-male, but then you have a female character playing a pivotal (if small) role. And that's the closest I can think of. But there must have been something in the last 100 or so years, no? |
