From what I’ve read on the other board, the public seems delighted with the production while theatre enthusiasts who post on the board are rather mixed. It’s interesting that A Chorus Line, Company and They’re Playing Our Song all looked to be lively yet by-the-book productions. None of them seemed to want to reinvent the wheel. Godspell was a bit more of a departure but not completely unexpected after seeing the last productions of the show over the last 30 years. Gypsy, on the other hand, seems to be a wild reinvention of the material. The overture is accompanied by the ensemble executing some uncharacteristically modern dancing. The sets are not really representative of anything and don’t evoke the original time period. The costumes don’t seem to be particularly cohesive or have much rhyme or reason to them. Most fascinatingly, this is the first ever production of Gypsy in Spain, and while Banderas has indicated that he has a heavy respect for the material (as evidenced by his many interviews in the press), he seems to want to present his own version of the show. Personally, while I haven’t seen the production, I have the feeling that I would feel rather disappointed by the physical production. The cast is uniformly strong judging from their past performances. Having seen Marta Ribera (Rose), Lydia Fairén (Louise), Carmen Conesa (Tessie Tura) and Marta Valverde (Mazeppa) in various productions over the last 15 years, I can vouch for the immense talent amongst the actors. It just looks like they’re working with a rather weighty (and seemingly pointless) directorial concept on their backs.

And reading over what I’ve just typed, I realized that I use the word “seem” way too often. Off to grab a thesaurus.
