Saw Maybe Happy Ending last night and it truly is quite wonderful. The opening number alone is just about worth the price of admission, the show charms, delights, is thoughtful, breaks your heart at moments, uplifts you the next and is glorious. Darren Criss gives a superb, nuanced performance, Helen Shen is excellent, they appeared to be perfectly in sync. I didn't realize that despite the supporting cast (also terrific), it's basically just them for 1:20 - there was one very brief moment of fumble mouth with one of the leads, otherwise, the two were flawless. I didn't mind the fumble mouth at all, it's why I love live theatre. The production design is stunning and Michael Arden keeps it all in check, never cloying or overly sentimental. If you go, an FYI, the stage is very high. There are scenes at different levels, one particularly high up. We were in row L and it was perfect. |
