| I was excited for this one since the early London buzz but I was pretty disappointed in this production. I’ll start with the highlights - which are truly excellent. Nicole’s As If We Never Said Goodbye is one of the strongest performances I’ve witnessed in any live venue. Her With One Look was also thrilling. Spoilers and praise for the Act Two opener made me think I would take it for granted but it’s equal parts cheek and genius. Diego Andres Rodriguez was in for Tom Francis and he was great. I preferred his singing to Tom Francis on the cast album. And the opening credits was clever fun. If someone told me this was enough to justify the (significant) cost of the tickets, I’d understand why they felt that way. Speaking of the new cast album, I liked it. So I was expecting to like this live and am surprised I didn’t. I consider myself a fan of the material. I had seen Betty Buckley in the original - I can still him the scenery. Glenn Close in what was considered a stripped down revival was glorious. Aside from the highlights of this production, the rest was underwhelming. The actors rarely play scenes together and instead talk/sing at the audience or the cameras, flattening out each scene and the overall show. The monochromatic costumes and minimalist set evoke broke more than baroque. Lonny Price’s simplified production was a much better conceived and directed revival. As far as divisive ALW productions go, I much preferred Bad Cinderella and the Ricky Martin Evita to this. |
