Yes, Mary Borland entered on an elephant for the finale in FACE THE MUSIC. There’s a newspaper report that Sam Harris bought it from Ziegfeld for $600, but I am dubious. There were also real elephants in the inaugural show at the Hippodrome in 1905, A YANKEE CIRCUS ON MARS. These elephants were decked out in chauffeur coats and caps, and “drove” cars on stage—ten chorus girls in the back seat of each one. Big Rosie, the star of JUMBO, had previously trod the boards at the Hipp in 1933, in AIDA. Flo Ziegfeld was obsessed with elephants and collecting them as figurines and charms, had a golden elephant statue in his theatre, and even bough a baby one for his kid and their home menagerie. Ziggy wrecked the greenhouse and went elsewhere (and had a sad life). I believe there were some elephants in the FOLLIES—maybe 1915? And possibly in the Shuberts’ A CIRCUS PRINCESS, but I’d have to check. There are elephants, but not live ones, in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, as are the ones in THE LION KING. Laura in LA, who is pleased the elephant in WATER FOR ELEPHANT is named Rosie |
