I re-read Walsh's biography (very comprehensive, but now obviously in need of another revision) about ten years ago, and I think your memory is correct. Walsh also says that ALW had to promise to hire an American for the female lead in his next London production; in fact he hired two (Ann Crumb and Kathleen Rowe McAllen) for "Aspects of Love."
