They mention Sarah's family in "Wheels of a Dream" in the context of taking the baby down south to visit them en route to their new life in California or wherever. Coalhouse's family is not mentioned and I wonder if, maybe, he doesn't have any left or why not take the baby to see them as well.

In any case, once both are dead, how easy would it be for even someone with resources at that time to track these people down to find out if they're even interested in raising this baby. Sarah doesn't even have a surname, as far as we know. She is referred to as Miss Sarah. Perhaps she has one that the audience doesn't get to hear, but would Mother even know it? She refers to Coalhouse as "Mr. Walker," so it would seem that, if she knew Sarah's surname, she would refer to her by it as "Miss [Surname].

The choice for Mother, once both parents are dead, seems to be turn the baby over to social services or raise him herself. I cannot imagine that whatever agency would be taking custody of the baby would have the resources to do any kind of search for family members. The best case scenario is most likely that the child is adopted. Worst case is growing up in an orphanage or work farm and aging out of the system. So, from Mother's point of view, why not raise this child, especially as she chooses to enter into a marriage with someone more capable of being a father figure to this child. Had Father not gone down on the LUSITANIA, she may have been forced into some very different choices.

For Coalhouse III, being raised in wealth and comfort by loving parents alongside loving siblings is surely the best possible outcome. As he grows up, Mother and Edgar can share their memories of Coalhouse and Sarah, so, at least, he has some picture of who his birth parents were and how much they loved him.
