Martin Gottfried did come with up a really nice big coffee table book with great photos. I don't recall his text very much, probably very opinionated as most historians or fans of musicals are. Another way to phrase it might be a "plotless musical that's not a revue" with the exception probably of "As Thousands Cheer" which had a theme, not just a juke-box collection of songs by a composer or a collection of songs and sketches without anything linking them thematically. Still wondering if Sondheim ever wrote or said that he might have seen "Love Life" though. As far as concept musicals, "A Chorus Line" and "Follies" are kind of like musical versions of a plotless slice of life play like David Storey's "The Changing Room" (except, besides singing and dancing, the people in the musicals kept their clothes on!) I guess there's always room for a nude concept musical -- hmm, as the overall theme of the revue was being naked, did "Naked Boys Singing" qualify? :) |
