I would say you can absolutely get away with the context of what you want without updating the text. For example the idea of black boys/white boys having gender representation could easily be done without making it modern.

Perhaps a “tastefully” placed red hat somewhere.

I think the trick in directing is to use the text but adapt the scenery, etc. I worked on a production of The Crucible a few years back that was essentially set in a post apocalyptic future… we didn’t change any of the text, just the scenery, costumes, etc.
