You're a braver man than I am, Chromolume! If at all possible I avoid them like the plague. There are almost always people in the cast who seem to enjoy them and when I sit in or listen over the tannoy I am often amazed at how adept they are steering the conversations in positive and productive directions. A good moderator is invaluable but sometimes the people entrusted to do that just aren't so hot. And inevitably a large percentage of the people who stay behind do so because they want an opportunity to vent their opinions. No matter how many times you remind them it's a Q&A and not a talkback, they still do a lot of talking back! (And who can argue when they've coughed up $200 for a ticket?)

I much prefer having chats with individuals at the stage door or on the street. I am always surprised how people expect I won't want to talk to them. Especially when most of the time, the people who stop you to chat are very appreciative and complimentary. Maybe I've had atypical luck in my lifetime when it came to audience feedback.
