Why the name calling? "Pathetic. Selfish. And absurd." And the self-conscious bullet point punctuation to turn your insults into some kind of incontrovertible mic drop? I didn't get the sense that the OP was being any of those things. They were outlining a reality that affects all of us who go to the theatre and may find the process of getting to our seats increasingly unpleasant and stressful. I think it's a combination of factors at work and I would not hang it all on the security measures. The scanners are remarkably inefficient in terms of expeditious entry and the general assumption that one must be in line by the half means 1400 people all arriving at the same time rather than just drifting in over a thirty-minute period. But I do think a cheap and cheerful solution would be to ensure that the security staff are pleasant and friendly and do not necessarily return audience members' stress and tension with their own. They need to be above a "tit for tat" attitude. (Obviously excessive rudeness and definitely physical confrontation can be expected to be met with equal pushback.) Like in any business, the employees must lead with a smile and a friendly attitude. It is not the customers' job to act friendly. The staff are being paid to do their job and in my opinion, part of the job description is creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. And stage managers need to corral their casts with more determination to make sure the stage and house are cleared by 7:20PM at the latest so that FOH can open up. Believe me, I have been in many shows where actors are milling about onstage warming up or just chatting after the half and the SM seems, at best, casually scolding. (I'm often one of those actors and sometimes I need to be put in my place.) |
