I’m a true believer in the original Dance of the Vampires. The biggest errors they made were changing the structure of the show and giving Michael Crawford so much sway in the production. The original Austrian version has the perfect mix of comedy and high drama. It’s a gorgeous production with a killer score. It’s such a shame that the show has become a punchline here stateside even though the true Dance of the Vampires has never been produced here. In regards to Austrian musicals, Rebecca was always doomed to be a flop because it’s an 80s-style mega-musical. Both Elisabeth and Mozart! are significantly more successful as dramatic pieces, and I don’t even think either could find success on Broadway. Vampires was always the surest bet, and they blew it.
