It depends on your criteria for flops. Ken Mandelbaum's "Not Since Carrie" goes into various kinds of flops -- from the truly bad to the practically "so bad it's good" to heartbreakers (those that had great scores, and/or performances, etc). So I'd list CANDIDE and MACK AND MABEL as two favorites, and since their scores are so terrific, subsequent productions after their initial flop continued. STEEL PIER has a mostly marvelous score (I skip Kristin Chenoweth's rather intentionally annoying number when listening to the recording, though she was very effective in the performance). DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES was so bad it was ... still not good, but strangely entertaining. PIPE DREAM has a mostly wonderful score with at least one clinker number in there. GOLDILOCKS is probably, among unsuccessful musicals, the one I played over and over again the most over the years because I love the score, the cast and the fabulous orchestrations. Perhaps tied with MACK AND MABEL and CANDIDE and IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, IT'S SUPERMAN and maybe HOUSE OF FLOWERS. If you ever hear the recording from the audience which was released of DRAT! THE CAT!, you'll wonder why it wasm't a hit, as the audience sounds like they are enjoying among the funniest, most enjoyable musicals ever. I think the producers ran out of money and had to close it unfortunately. I'd recommend the Mandelbaum book, as it really got me to check out some wonderful scores that deserve to be heard, even though their productions didn't last. |
