I became a lifelong Page fan after seeing her in the film SUMMER AND SMOKE when I was ten years old. Even at that young age I was able to acknowledge her brilliance as an actress. I was fortunate enough to see her in six shows with BLACK COMED/WHITE LIES being my very first play. This was followed by LOOK AWAY, ABSURD PERSON SINGULAR, AGNES OF GOD, and BLITHE SPIRITS. However, my favorite Page performance was her portrayal of Regina Hubbard in THE LITTLE FOXES at the Gateway Playhouse (with the wonderful Betty Field as Birdie). The legendary actress Kim Stanley is quoted as saying it was probably one of the finest performances she'd ever seen. Page's hesitation at the top of the stairs as her husband pleaded for his medication is probably one of the most intense moments I've ever witnessed on any stage. I'm so glad that besides the film SUMMER AND SMOKE, we also have her performance on film as Alexandra Del Lago in SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH. I once saw Dorothy McGuire on stage as the Princess Kosmonopolis (as well as Elizabeth Taylor in a TV production) and no one could come close to Page's outstanding performance. Page once joked she never looked more attractive than she did in the movie nor since. Writers DeWitt BodeenHerman J. MankiewiczArthur Wing Pinero |
