I saw it last night & I really liked it. I'm a gay guy who has always been drawn to Tammy Faye Bakker's flamboyant, messy, larger-than-life persona. And I'm a huge fan of Elton John & Jake Shears. I almost flew to London to see this a couple of years ago. Even though I sound biased, I had very low expectations, given the word of mouth (and also because I wasn't crazy about the Jessica Chastain movie). The show could use a little more focus & I would love some more camp/comedy. But I thought it was interesting. I realize it's not for everyone & that people may bristle at a show depicting Jerry Falwell & the origins of the Moral Majority, but I also love how he's basically the antagonist. (Jerry Falwell as a villain in an Elton John musical? Sign me up!) While the show is far from perfect, I appreciate that it took swings & tried to do something different. Much more satisfying to me than the by-the-numbers movie adaptations currently plaguing Broadway. (I really liked the score too. I found it far from just serviceable. I want a cast recording.) |
