I like some things about the film, but, yeah, it certainly seems to me that most people (or at least most people who love the original show) have a lot of reservations about the movie. I think we don't all agree on the reasons. For example, I don't agree with Chromolume that Stubby Kaye seems to be phoning it in. He's just low-key, which I think is right for Nicely-Nicely. On the other, I'm less happy with Vivian Blaine than Chromolume seems to be. I feel like her performance has not been adjusted sufficiently for the screen, and I blame Mankiewicz, who is really responsible for most everything that's wrong with the film. I think the filming of "Adelaide's Lament" doesn't work too well because Blaine sings straight at the camera too much of the time, something that I think doesn't ever work. This had to have been Mankiewicz's decision. Worst of all, he rewrites the book. It really feels like he felt he had to rewrite it to earn his screenwriter credit, but his way of rewriting it is to take almost every line and rephrase it a bit, usually adding more words, which makes the script seem wordy, not to mention he kills all the laughs with his rewriting. | |
