I think the reason he breaks down is because he sings, "Me, I like to love, me." In other words, I love me. As he struggles, he says, "Me, I like—me, I love—me." This is immediately followed with "I don't love me!"
It worked in the original because "Me, I like to love" was suddenly was the first of the sequence. When it becomes the second of the sequence, even if it's followed with "me," I don't think it hits home for the audience. |
