I realize it's anecdotal but I saw three musicals this past week and there was only one understudy on (in a rather tiny part). Admittedly two are in previews so perhaps there's less likelihood of someone being out.

I try and remember that when I was a kid I saw THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and was p.o.'ed that Cleo Laine was out as Princess Puffer, but it did give me a chance to see a 26-year old Donna Murphy at the beginning of her career. I try and imagine every understudy as a future Tony-winning legend :).

Sorry if I'm being ridiculously Pollyanna-ish.
