I've always prided myself in knowing the differences between "alternate", "standby", and "understudy" and I know Mandy Gonzalez is performing most Tuesdays. But tonight (Wednesday) I saw the show and I'm perplexed to see her not listed in the Playbill as an alternate. There's no mention of her at all in my Playbill. Do they print different Playbills on Tuesdays or the specific days that she "guest stars"? That's incredibly wasteful isn't it? Saw this show in London last December. I can't believe it, but I feel it's actually improved. No doubt, the energy and vibe has been adjusted (whether intentionally or subconsciously) for a NY audience. It feels more energetic. Nicole's Norma is even more settled and unique than I remember in London. This is a role she truly has made her own, having completely birthed a new Norma that has never been seen before. Unfortunately my favorite part of the show from London, Tom Francis, was out. I was so impressed by his performance there because I felt he anchored the whole show, keeping it from drifting off too far into insanity. Thankfully his understudy Diego Rodriguez did a great job. SPOILERS************************* Actually, I lied - my favorite part of the London production was of course the outside sequence. Everyone loved it here and it's still fun, but here it's been slightly de-fanged of it's danger/excitement. In London, he exits from the back side of the theatre, walks around a rather lengthy corner, comes around to the front and through the attached hotel's courtyard-esque entrance before coming inside the front door. The fact that he makes it back to the stage right at the moment of the final note was absolutely thrilling. Here, he leaves through the front door, just crosses the street before doubling back to the theater and reentering from the front side. It's lost its "will he make it back on time?" edge. Alas, aside from that, I think everything has slightly improved. |
