Michael McGrath's first topline lead role at Theatre-By-The-Sea was as Alvin in I LOVE MY WIFE in 1981, co-starring his future lifelong friends Gary Lynch (who spoke eloquently at yesterday's memorial) and Fred Barton. Later that summer he played the John Travolta role ("Dream Drummin') in OVER HERE! (with a full big band moving back and forth on a hydraulic platform – in the Tommy Brent years, this was no usual summer stock theatre!)
He also did A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE, a scene from which they showed in a video at the memorial (containing many clips of his work.) I saw him do the leads in LITTLE ME (with Rita McKenzie as Older Belle), and MAKING WHOOPEE. In the video yesterday they also showed scenes from his Theatre-By-The-Sea performances as George M. Cohan in GEORGE M! On Facebook I once saw his drag monologue from Theatre-By-The-Sea's SUGAR BABIES, and practically croaked laughing... |
