I saw it at the Shady Grove Music Fair and the cast was game. Blaine may be the only Phyllis who is also a Sally and she had less innate hauteur and more acquired class; you could still see the showgirl. But the musical is just a challenge in the round, with so many scenes cinematic wipes. You’d see characters start down a long aisle, hit the stage, say a few lines, exit up another long aisle. The style of the conceit - the sudden appearances and disappearances into shadows - was impossible. So all the traffic made the book even less accessible. When Loveland arrived, it just unfolded. You had to understand the psycho drama exploding from inside the two couples and it was not manifest theatrically. |
