Sorry if that came across as being ageist. I haven't seen THE ROOMMATE or seen Mia Farrow onstage ever, but my sense of her voice is that it's small and fragile, at least next to LuPone's blare. (Nobody has really mentioned the irony of Patti LuPone complaining about how loud performers are preventing her from being heard LOL.)

It's a dilemma that I'm surprised doesn't emerge more frequently. Watching MARY JANE earlier this year I marvelled at how blissfully quiet it was in that theatre. The spellbinding performances created a hush over the audience that would have been broken by thumping coming from an adjoining theatre. (In the Friedman's case I'm not sure it does share walls with another theatre?)
