Not before Ragtime, but I do love the work of Guettel, whose scores inspire a use of beautiful voices in traditional ways (Clark and especially O'Hara are Exhibit A.) Having seen both the exquisite Encores! Piazza and Wine and Roses over about 9 months, I remain a strong admirer. O'Hara talks frequently about the absence of scores that use her instrument, and whatever one felt about the Wine and Roses, it certainly platformed O'Hara's gift as few musicals can. |
