The 1978 production was sublime. Coleman, Comden & Green and Prince at the top of their game. The Robin Wagner sets were incredible. The show had one problem. Madelaine Kahn. A easily wilted Lily. Had the over-cautious Fryer fired Kahn out of town and had understudy Judy Kaye take over. The reviews would have been A STAR IS BORN make that two stars are born (Kaye and Kline), the should would have been a smash and it would have won the best musical Tony and run far far longer. From what I've read over the years, Fryer was always over-cautious. Look how long he took to cast Lansbury in Mame. The revival was fine, but not the of the scale of the original. The only problem for me with the original was Imogene Coca who was just too-too and too cute. The role is a nut. She doesn't need to push the comedy, the role is comedy is played straight. Revival did make the case for the show as worthy of future major productions.
