I was a teenager when I first saw Gypsy, and I viewed it from the daughters' perspective -- their desires vs their overbearing mother's. Now that I'm old, I have much more sympathy for Rose, who just wanted "the best" for her daughters. Women of her era probably did not have much choice in their futures when the prevailing directive was to get married and have children. I cannot watch the show now without thinking that while my mother and I disagreed a lot, she only wanted good things for me. I am pretty sure she wouldn't want me to be a stripper. Don't tell Mama.
