I'm not exactly sure how everything works, but Broadway Cast Recordings if released on CD only lose big money. However, if a label releases a recording via streaming and on vinyl first and the release becomes profitable, then they can consider a CD release. That may be an oversimplification, but that's what the people at Ghostlight Records told me back in 2019 over the phone when they released the Off-Broadway revival recording of Little Shop of Horrors.
I imagine if a recording does not become profitable after it's released via streaming and vinyl, it's unlikely that there will be a CD release. |
