I haven't seen SUNSET yet but I have enjoyed Jamie Lloyd's work on Chekhov and Sondheim and Shakespeare and Pinter and Rostand. I think his style certainly brings clarity to the texts of these plays and he elicits probing performances from his casts. I expect that he can help paper over some of the banalities in the ALW/TR composition and claim at least spiritual authorship in the Prince mold.
And for the record, EVITA was my first Broadway show and I loved it and still thrill to the music. I missed Miss LuPone but I love the extant clips and I believe her when she tells me how good she was. |
