Howard Miller takes a look at Left on Tenth at the James Earl Jones Theatre:
Truth may be stranger than fiction, but it does not necessarily make for a compelling theatrical experience. And when the truth that is being depicted is based on autobiography, the biggest challenge is how to shape it so that an audience made up of people who do not know you will be as caught up in your story as you are. Case in point, Delia Ephron's Left on Tenth, opening tonight at the James Earl Jones Theatre. It is decidedly autobiographical in nature, and it strives to win us over by combining two disparate styles: a cheery rom-com and a frightening tale of a killer disease. It is, unfortunately, a mixture that never fully gels. |
