A commercial out of town tryout costs $1m and more. I think thats how much a chorus line revival 2006 cost in San Fran and it actually recouped that which is rare. So I assume death becomes me was several million and probably didn’t recoup that investment.

With nonprofits, there is more enhancement money from the nonprofit and commmercial mix and probably corporate donors. So it seems to be a more cost effective way to do it.

I don’t think internet is that much different than major papers sending a critic out of town—which was done occasionally for big shows. I think the big problem is how technical shows are so it’s not easy to add and drop songs and scenes during the tryout. They seem to take notes and try to incorporate the changes before first broadway preview. It’s also why shows don’t seem to change much during previews—more tweaking than rewrite.
