The 35th annual Cabaret Convention kicks off its 3-day celebration tonight at Jazz at Lincoln Center in Columbus Circle, but I want to take a few moments to reflect on another amazing event that recently brought together a number of New York nightlife's best and brightest. ''Daydream: A Tribute to the Life of John Hoglund,'' the late and beloved cabaret critic for Backstage, BroadwayWorld, Cabaret Scenes, the Native, After Dark and many more, was held Sept. 27 at Pangea NYC, and it was such a warm and nostalgic reunion of award-winning and acclaimed artists.

Marcus Simeone and Sue Matsuki co-hosted and Tracy Stark music-directed - each stellar in their own right - and they put together this terrific musical memorial, based on John's own wish list of favorite singers and musicians. Among the highlights of the night: Marta Sanders' stirring ''Before the Parade Passes By'' (by Jerry Herman); Karen Akers' captivating ''Some People's Lives'' (by Janis Ian); Tom Andersen's haunting and hypnotic ''Ghost in This House'' (by Hugh Prestwood), and Lina Koutrakos' marvelous ''My Favorite Year'' (by Michele Brourman).

The illustrious lineup also included Karen Mack, Ricky Ritzel, D.C. Anderson, Jose Luis, Ann Kittredge, Sean Harkness and Sidney Myer, and Simeone closed with his dazzling ''Daydreams'' (by Jason Darrow). It was a lovefest in John's memory, and the enthusiastic audience included such stellar talents as KT Sullivan, who also heads the Cabaret Convention, plus Jeff Harnar, Phillip Officer, Jeanne MacDonald, Craig Rubano and many more.

John was a true champion of singers and songwriters, especially when print media was king (long before the Internet). It was moving to see him remembered so lovingly by those onstage and in the audience. Bravo to the close-knit cabaret community for singing his praises!
