I have three, each featuring one of the original stars.

The Original London Cast of MAN OF LA MANCHA is the best recording of that show. Keith Michell is compelling, Joan Diener is better than she was on the OBCR, and at two discs it has much more of the score. It has terrific atmosphere and driving energy.

For CAROUSEL, I love the Music Theatre of Lincoln Center album. John Raitt brings much more nuance and warmth to the acting than he had twenty years earlier. Eileen Christy and Susan Watson are vivid and luminous as Julie and Carrie. It combines opera-house grandeur with theatrical excitement.

My favorite version of THE KING AND I is the 1978 Broadway revival recording. Much more of the King's material is included, and you get Brynner's most mature take on the role. Constance Towers is lovely and the supporting cast is excellent.
